Getting Started with Tarot
This guide introduces newcomers to the art of tarot reading. When selecting a deck, use your intuition and seek one that appeals to you personally. Popular choices include the Rider-Waite deck, which is excellent for beginners due to its clear imagery.
Deck Structure
Every tarot deck contains 78 cards divided into two categories:
- Major Arcana: 22 cards symbolizing important experiences, decisions, emotions, spirituality and events
- Minor Arcana: 56 cards organized into four suits
The Four Suits
Each Minor Arcana suit represents different life aspects:
- Cups (Water): Emotions, creativity, and imagination
- Pentacles/Coins (Earth): Finances, career, and livelihood
- Swords (Air): Thoughts, beliefs, and communication
- Wands (Fire): Spirituality, motivation, and inspiration
One-Card Spread
The simplest way to begin is with a one-card daily draw. Ask a clear question (preferably yes/no format) and draw a single card for guidance. Reflect on its meaning throughout your day.
Three-Card Spread
A common beginner method examining past, present, and future regarding a specific situation:
- First card - Past influences
- Second card - Present situation
- Third card - Future outcome
